Die wohl erste fotografische Aufnahme eines Zombie stammt von Zora Neale Hurston, einer afroamerikanischen Anthropologin und Schriftstellerin. Das Bild entstand Mitte der 1930er Jahre während einer Forschungsreise auf Haiti. Hurston hatte zuvor bereits Todes- und Trance-Rituale im Deep South studiert.
